COVID-19 UPDATES

  • Covid-19 Vaccinations Available for 5-11 year-olds

CDC Director Rochelle P. Walensky, M.D., M.P.H., endorsed the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendation that children 5 to 11 years old be vaccinated against COVID-19 with the Pfizer-BioNTech pediatric vaccine. CDC now expands vaccine recommendations to about 28 million children in the United States in this age group and allows providers to begin vaccinating them as soon as possible.

COVID-19 vaccines have undergone – and will continue to undergo – the most intensive safety monitoring in U.S. History.

Vaccinating children will help protect them from getting COVID-19 and therefore reduce their risk of severe disease, hospitalizations, or developing long-term COVID-19 complications. Getting your children vaccinated can help protect them against COVID-19, as well as reduce disruptions to in-person learning and activities by helping curb community transmission.

Distribution of pediatric vaccinations across the country has started, with plans to scale up to full capacity starting the week of November 8th. Vaccines will be available at thousands of pediatric healthcare provider offices, pharmacies, Federally Qualified Health Centers and more.

As a partner of the Canton Public School District, G.A. Carmichael Family Health Clinic is available to assist families in getting their children 5-11 vaccinated. Please call 601-521-9236 for more information.

  • CDC RECOMMENDATIONS

Starting immediately, if you received your last dose of the Pfizer vaccine six months or more ago and fall into one of three high-risk groups, you can receive a booster, said U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy. Those groups are:
    1. People age 65 or older;
    2. Anyone with a medical condition that puts them at a higher risk of severe illness with COVID, like obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, and others;
    3. People who work or live in a high-risk setting:

    • First responders (healthcare workers, firefighters, police, congregate care staff)
    • Education staff (teachers, support staff, daycare workers)
    • Food and agriculture workers
    • Manufacturing workers
    • Corrections workers
    • S. Postal Service workers
    • Public transit workers
    • Grocery store workers

-"Depending on your location, you can get these shots at pharmacies, doctors' offices, or vaccination sites," said Jeff Zients, the White House COVID-19 coordinator.
"Boosters will be free for everyone, regardless of immigration or health insurance status. No ID or insurance required," he said.

-Pfizer announced this week that its COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective for children ages 5-11, meaning the vaccine could be approved for children as early as the end of October.

  • Monoclonal Antibodies for High-Risk COVID-19 Positive Patients

    • Have you tested positive for COVID-19?
    • Are you 65 years or older?
    • Are you 12 years or older and have a chronic condition?

If so, the IMMEDIATE use of monoclonal antibody treatments could help reduce your need for hospitalization !

    What are Monoclonal Antibodies?

The monoclonal antibodies treatments bamlanivimab/etesevimab (made by Eli Lilly and Company) and the therapeutic cocktail casirivimab/imdevimab (made by Regeneron) are laboratory-made proteins that mimic the immune system's ability to fight off harmful pathogens such as viruses. Monoclonal antibodies treatments are given to help treat patients with COVID-19. The sooner the treatment, the better!

    How do I get treatment?

    • Call your local healthcare provider
    • Visit a treatment locator at http://infusioncenter.org maintained by the National Infusion Center Association (NICA) or https://protect-hhs.gov/pages/therapeutics-distribution#distribution-locations maintained by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)

    Visit your local infusion center.

  • Contact Tracing Procedures

Immediately after principals are notified that a student in their school has tested positive for or been diagnosed with COVID-19, the principal will notify Dr. Sharon Brown, the District COVID-19 Coordinator as well as their department head of the positive case.

The principal will contact the student's teacher/teachers to begin contact tracing.Contact is defined as any student who came in close contact for an extended period of time (15 min) with the COVID positive student.

The teacher or school staff will compile the list of students whose parents need to be contacted using the information provided when the student was registered. Parents this information must be up to date.

The names and contact numbers of parents, as well as persons who can be contacted in case of an emergency, will be given to Dr. Sharon Brown so that she can begin notifying parents to quarantine their student/students.

    Quarantine Period

Students, teachers, and staff who areNOT fully vaccinated and are identified as close contacts to COVID-19, as outlined above, should be in Quarantine for a full 14 days. There are additional options to the 14-day quarantine period from the school setting as follows:

    • 10-day option: Quarantine can end after 10 days if the individual has no symptoms during the entire 10-day period, or
    • 7- day plus test option: If the individual has no symptoms for 7 days and has a negative COVID-19 test (molecular or antigen) collected on days 5, 6, or 7 of the quarantine period, the quarantine period can be discontinued quarantine after 7 days.
    • People who are fully vaccinated should get tested 3-5 days after coming into close contact with someone with COVID-19 and wear a mask indoors in public for 14 days or until they test negative. If symptoms develop, they should isolate and get tested immediately
